Yet again the public has overwhelming rejected jets at the island airport.

On July 24, 2026 the federal government officially rejected the jets proposal citing an overwhelming 87% public opposition from over 87,000 survey respondents. The campaign to stop jets was hard won. In March 2026, the Toronto Port Authority, together with Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government tried to expand the airport to accommodate larger passenger jets, using the introduced Bill 110 to take over the adjacent Little Norway Park and most of Toronto island. Yet no publicly available business plan or justification of the cost was provided by the Toronto Port Authority. This galvanized various citizens groups, organizations, and the provincial opposition party to produce solid rationale why jets would endanger the city’s economy, environment, and public health. The BQNA issued a statement on why we opposed the introduction of jets and also gave oral testimony in Queens Park against Bill 110.

Next steps:

First off get out and enjoy our waterfront! Celebrate all those who worked so hard to get us to this point take some well-deserved deep breaths.

Thank our local MP(s), Transport Minister and PM for listening to Canadians and continue to pressure politicians to take these necessary next steps. We count on you to ensure the island airport does not expand in future. We now need to pressure politicians to:

1. Fill the FIVE vacancies on the Board of the Toronto Port Authority with people who care about the Waterfront and its future, not the opposite! There is no excuse for having FIVE positions vacant.

2. Force the provincial government to give back to the City of Toronto the land it grabbed that includes Little Norway Park. The Ford government didn't just grab the land; it threw the City out of the decision-making bodies. That should not stand.

3. Restore the City as a partner in the tripartite arrangement, an agreement between the Port Authority and Transport Canada and the City, signed in 1985 that puts restrictions on airport operations to protect the Waterfront and its communities.
